Things to do

The beauty of Ravenglass is its location away from the noise and bustle found in many areas of the Lake District. Yet it is only 10 miles from Scafell Pike (England’s highest mountain), 7 miles from Wastwater (England's deepest Lake) and just 5 miles from the stunning Eskdale Valley. Wastwater, with its crystal clear waters is wonderful to swim in (if not a little chilly) and if you have canoes, kayaks, or paddleboards, these can also be used on the lake.

The area has plenty of activities for all ages including wonderful walks, mountain biking and an abundance of wildlife to view. On your doorstep, you will find the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (La’al Ratty) which runs from Ravenglass to Eskdale and Muncaster Castle is less than 1 mile away with its Hawk & Owl Centre and beautiful gardens. Alternatively, there is lovely 1.5 mile offroad bridleway walk from the cottage door, which takes you right up to the Castle entrance.

Drigg Beach is a beautiful long sandy beach with a Nature Reserve in the sand dunes, only a 15 minute drive from the cottage. Great for bird watching, rock pooling, swimming and picnics.

There are a couple of good quality places to eat and drink within easy reach of the cottage including the Pennington Hotel and the Ratty Arms, which are a stone's throw away. You can book meals out in advance. A lovely daytime cafe can be found at Muncaster Castle.

Why not, step back in time with a visit to see Eskdale Mill which is a water powered corn mill.  Located alongside Whillan Beck, the mill demonstrates 500 years of water power and the traditional craft of stone corn milling. There’s something for everyone to do.

When it comes to Roman history you will find the ruins of a Roman Bath House just a five minute walk from the cottage and Hardknott Roman Fort is located partway up Hardknott Pass (approximately 9 miles away) and is available at all times to explore.

There are two very different golf courses within easy reach of the cottage. Eskdale Golf Course is only a couple of miles away and it is an 18 hole par 69 parkland course, whilst the 18 hole Seascale Golf Club, a traditional links with views of Scafell Pike to one side and the West Cumbrian coast to the other is only 6 miles away. Both courses provide challenges to low handicap players whilst still being excellent for beginners.

Based nearby in Eskdale, West Lakes Adventure offer a range of outdoor adventure activities including canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, ghyll scrambling, rock climbing and abseiling. Between April and September, they run open group activities which you can simply book spaces on.

If you’re heading into the fells it is essential to be fully equipped for all weather (even if it seems to be a nice day) with map and compass. Wasdale Mountain Rescue offer fantastic advice.

In the evening you can just sit out on the patio and admire a stunning sunset with a glass of something nice and a good book. Ravenglass is the perfect place to unwind away from the stress of modern life.
